The 2 quickest ways I know to identify a RH vs. RE
1. There is an electrical connector that plugs into the tranny above the pan - not the tailshaft. How many pins in the electrical cconnector? 8 for RE
2. I see you can't drive it but if the TC locks up between 3rd and OD then probably an RE.
Also, if you drop the pan - how many electrical gizmos/wires are connected to the valve body? more than 6?
Looks like 46RE's started in 1996 http://www.transmissionpartsusa.com/...-000053397.htm

Okay update.

I took a better look.
1. First the transmission was over filled by about an inch and a half on the dipstick. Possibly the clutches are saturated and cannot grip, or this is causing a pressure issue?
2. The number best I can read on the transmission is 1 PK521184322500 1499. So can we tell if this is RE or RH?
3. The electrical connector above the pan has 3 wires.
4. I was shocked to see so many wires inside the transmission. I will attempt to attach pictures here. (never posted pics)
5. There was (guessing) over 1 table spoon on metal shavings on the magnet. The most disturbing thing to me was that some were larger. Maybe the size and look of glitter. Also there was a small brittle black strip on the bottom of the pan.
6. Before I dropped the pan I started the truck. I did not hear the buzzing as before. That may be a cold weather thing. Also in gear, if I reved it up, it would attempt to move at high rpms.
7. The filter looks filthy.

I'm thinking I should clean the filter, put it back together, get the right amount of fluid in it and see if it works.

Hopefully you guys can help id the transmission and help me determine what models and years I can get a replacement from.
I think I will look at what's available before I venture into tearing into this one.

Thanks for everyones help. If I can't post the pictures I can email them to anyone that is interested in helping.
Thanks

I have 1996 5.9l with a 46RE that I just rebuilt myself last month. Here are a couple of pointers for you.

1) Before the rebuild, my tranny started slipping and jumping in/out of OD then finally it would not engage any gear (D or R).
2) Upon teardown, the frictions, steels and bands looked okay. The culprit was the overunning clutch assembly (needle bearings) in the OD section has melted away and sent little pieces of crap all through the tranny. the valve body had a lot of film in all the passages.

In summary, check your magnet first. Then if nothing else appears to be broken, you could just have a bunch of junk in your valve body. The question is, where did that junk come from????

The only way to really clean the valve body is remove dissassemble, clean, inspect and reassemble it.

I am putting together a 46RE rebuild document soon, if you care to tackle it yourself

My son-in-law had the truck and may not have noticed things. I hadn't driven it in a while.

I didn't see any needle bearings. Super fine (normal stuff) and metal flake looking stuff. Did you actually see bearings?

If I just "try it again" your right, I'll clean out the valve body first.

I'm anxious to see it.

Could you tell from the picture if this was an RH or RE? That's important to me.

Thanks everyone
Rick

96 and later is 46RE. 95 was the last year for the RH.

Does anyone know where I can cross-reference the number I pulled off the side of the transmission? It sounds like I have an RE, but the dealer from my vin# said it could be an RH.
Plus lv360ram says there should be 8 pins in a connector where I have 3.

I concur. 94-95 were 46RH, 96-01 were 46RE.

If you give the dealership parts dept that PK5xxxxx number they should be able to tell you for sure what model it is.
Also look on the case near the back of the trans, RE has a 2 wire sensor for the output speed sensor, I don't think the RH has this sensor.

Just looked at your pics.
You definitely have an RE trans. You can clearly see the governor pressure sensor and solenoid. The RH doesn't have those parts.
What ever you decide definitely flush or replace the aux cooler if it has one before you install your used/rebuilt trans.

And watch out for that check valve when you flush that cooler.
