Exclamation Distributor cap chaos

Hey just thought I would let everyone know what a big pain in the a** changing my cap and rotor was on my 01 Ram! First I might say that the dist. cap is hidden well behind the engine and under the wiper cowl. I stood on a ladder at first but due to my overwhelming height 5"8 i could not comfortably reach the plug wires nor could I see them very well. I had to get inside the damn engine compartment and contort my body into some stable position so I could pull off the wires off of the old cap and place on my new cap and rotor. The wires had very little slack so I could not lay the old distributor aside as I pluged up the new one ( big pain). Oh yeah those little hold down screws were not the easiest to get to either.
Anyway I could keep going but I just thought it was a big pain to complete something so simple. I dont like being able not to see things when I am working with them. Hopefully more of you have had to cuss your way through this as they say misery loves company! Have a Nice day!!!

It isn't that bad.

Take off four wires from one side, putting them onto the new cap as you go. Take off coil wire, put it on new cap. Remove screws. This allows you to move the old cap out of the way (push to the side that still has wires attached), giving you enough room for the new cap. Remove old rotor, install new rotor (just pull and push). Put new cap on, screw down. Take last four wires off old cap one at a time and put them on the new cap in the right spots. Make sure wires are still routed properly as per Dodge TSB.

I just changed my distributor cap and rotor (wires, and plugs too) the other day too.

Next time take the throttle body off. Makes a world of difference. I just pulled all my wires off since I was replacing them anyway. Also makes it easier.

Do the wires one at a time. Take off one old, install one new, repeat.

All the odd number cylinders are on the driver side (1,3,5,7) and all the the even number cylinders are on the passenger side (2,4,6,8)
1&2 are closest to the radiator, 7&8 are closest to the distributor

The distributor cap will have a number 1 on it for the #1 plug and then going clock wise will be 8,4,3,6,5,7,2 and you should be back at 1. The terminal in the center is for the coil wire.

Yeah... but it's really more a matter of opinion.

For the plugs I wouldn't use bosch. I'd use champions. It's a dodge.
These are the ones I used

but these are probably good too, and they're cheaper

As for the cap I was going to get the mopar performance one but it has aluminum terminals so I got one from orileys (forget the brand) with brass terminals.

Those wires are probably fine. I got the MSD ones. I like them alot.

Go ahead and get yourself some new clips too cause the fat wires don't fit in the stock clips.

I don't have a problem spending some extra cash and NO one on here can agree on good plugs.
