Default four wheel drive actuator problem

Ok here is the situation
Im getting a rattle noise from the actuator, when i engage the 4wd, it goes away.
I have checked for any broken vaccum lines, and none seem to be broken.
I have removed the actuator, when i blow into the red line, the actuator engages to 4wd, but it wont retract. Should the actuator retract completely on its own, or is the actuator released with vaccum.
If anyone can call me to figure this out or supply me a phone number, i can call you.

Thanks
Chuy

when i blow in the other nipple, it does not retract, could that be that the actuator is bad.

yes i am aware of that, i suck on one end and it engages, i suck on the other end, and the actuator doesnt seem to retract, thats what my problem is. would that mean that the actuator has gone bad or does that mean the vaccum switch at the trasfercase has gone bad.

You said you were blowing! To properly check it you need a vacuum pump with a gauge. 15lbs max pressure and see if the pressure holds. To check the lines you need said vacuum gauge and see if the lines are providing 15lbs. One will have it when the TC is in 2wd and the other will have it when in 4wd.

i've never tried just sucking on the lines, but if you apply vacuum on one line, the diaphram is supposed to move all the way to drivers side and engage the collar over the 2 axle halves. then when you apply vac on the other, it should move all the way to the other side, and drag the fork and collar all the way to the passenger side. if you don't have a vac pump, just connect a vac line from the engine.

if these motions don't occur, the shaft inside the cad is probably rusty or frozen. take it apart and clean it.

the vac switch on the t-case is only responsible for switching the vac from one line to the other. easy to test by just feeling the lines with your finger.

While it's open, check the shoes on the fork. Little black plastic things should be there.

sounds like you've got it fixed. there's very little inside the cad to go wrong. the most common problem is a sticky or rusted shaft. some cleaning with sandpaper or steel wool will usually bring it back to life. the telling tale is to connect the vac and observe the fork move back and forth. once you get that, you're good.
