Default NP231D Transfer Case what will work?

Well i learned one thing today after joining, i have a 2nd Gen Dodge

I have a 98 Dodge Ram 1500 4X4 5.2 auto, chasing around the country i need my truck dependable
sold my 03 Chevy & bought the 98 Dodge on a trip to Montana getting a 56 Olds in Billings my transfer case made noises you never want to hear

That's why i need some help, i'm getting info in every direction it was time to come to a place that knows Dodge's

My tag says NP 231D - 272 ratio it's a automatic i was told 97 TC won't work but could be modified and on other units there are many length & spline that could be a problem

My Question - What year units will work in my truck, just want to remove & replace it with a good used unit, i see ads for 98 to 01 231D's

Here's the deal the dealer where i bought the Dodge will R & R the TC i supply at no cost to me, we had a few issues about the downfall of the TC & agreed on this solution

I don't want to buy one or ship it in then find out it won't work when the dealer is installing it,
Thanks for any help

Nailhead,
do a search on the NP transfer cases.
they wear a hole in the case and leak the fluid out.
may be the reason for your failure.

i can't find the link for the fix.

Hi everyone. I have the exact truck and same issue at the moment. My t case model is 231 D. I have found a 231 HD from a local cheap. Does anyone know if the HD will work?

from my understanding the HD is HEAVY DUTY and is actaully a better case.
