Question about putting on a new cap for spark plugs.

Do yourself a favor and take the throttle body off too. Makes it alot easier to get back there.

Idk about that. If some one was selling a 52mm I would just put that one is the stock place. than i would take it off.

i set the new cap next to the old one and moved the wires over one by one then replaced the wires after that

Sure it will. Both caps should have a "1" stamped by terminal #1. Color code each terminal with each wire, orient the caps (old and new) the same, and you can tell exactly what wires go where.

ok now how about changing the gaping on the spark plugs? I got a feller gauge and the are over by .02.

Come on man, your making this harder on yourself than necessary. Just take your time. I undid my old cap from the base and pushed it to the side (and turned so i could see the top. I got my new cap and my box of wires and oriented the cap. Attached the wires in the same pattern on the cap as was originally there and referenced the firing order sheet to see which labeled wire went to which terminal. Just do one at a time... Then after the cap and wires were assembled (and separated (4 left, 4 right).. make sure the cap is oriented correctly and go from the passenger side and manuever the cap and wires back to the distributor. Replace your rotor real quick (note the orientation when you pull it off as it will help you put it back on). Put the new one on. Throw the cap on and mount. As I said my wires were labeled so i referenced the firing order again and pluged the corresponding wires to the spark plugs. Cliped the wires back in and started her up.

As far as being over by .02, take a hammer and lightly tap the end of the plug. It shouldn't take much force to make up .02 so be very gentle. Then recheck and gap them.

I have just never done this before. I was just down at the truck looking at them. I think I can get my fat *** to stand on the pice of frame on the drivers side. That will make getting to the cap a hole lot better.

I laid across the truck parallel with the truck. (elbows on engine, knees on the fan shroud, and legs hangin off.. etc) That way both of my arms could be back there at the same time. This is where cereal's tip of removing the tb would help. I didn't do it when I did mine (wasn't suggested when I did mine) but I can see where it would help out with a little extra wiggle room. 4 tb bolts, 3 bracket bolts, then only 2 clips (since we don't have cruise control) to take the tb off. Heck, take a look at that leaky plenum while you have it off anyway wish ya luck on the whole deal. It is pretty straight forward... just take your time.
