Angry Broken front axle

So.... my husband had this bright idea to replace the wheel bearing and u-joint on my truck. Not that bad an idea, except we didn't have the tools to do it, or an appropriate shop to do it in. Long story short, he screwed up my truck, and then tried to drive it to park it somewhere, and now my right front axle is broken, where the u-joint attaches. Any suggestions as to where I can find a replacement one that isn't going to cost me a fortune? I have horses, and I use my truck to haul hay and pull horse trailers all the time. I can't live without it! But I just can't afford $400 for a new one right now.

PS- It's a 1999 Ram 1500 4x4 with the 318 engine, and without ABS on the front.

junk yard may be the cheapest, but you'll have to pay attention that its the right size, splines, etc.

here's one place with new ones. about $150 for the inner axle.

Hmm. This is the closest I could find to what I need

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1994-...Q5fAccessories

But I guess we just need to tear it apart again and see if it's only the outer one that is broken, or if it's both. The u-part that the u-joint presses into is broken, I'm just not sure on which axle, or if on both. Thanks for the links.

^ careful, that one is drivers side.

that's not a bad price for both axles and and the joint.
that would be the fastest repair.
however, you might be able to get by with just one end or the other.
so it might save you some money.

i'm not sure about your 95, but the unitized bearings on the later models are about $175+ each.

btw, the end with the loops for the u-joint is called the yoke.

It's a 99, and yes, the bearing is a whole hub assembly, and it was $95 for the one without ABS. It would have been well over $200 for the one with the ABS. It's sitting in a parking lot right now, I guess we'll jack it up and pull the wheel off and see if both sides are broken. I saw that the one on ebay was the driver's side, but it's the only one I saw that shows a picture like what I need. I've emailed them to ask if they have a rt side one, but haven't heard back yet. And yokes is the word I couldn't come up with, lol. Thanks.

You can temporarily remove the inner part of the axle from the housing and stick a rag in it to keep it from leaking badly. Atleast you will be able to use the truck in 2wd for now.

From looking on ebay.... it seems that a 1500 4x4 and 2500 4x4 series axle are interchangeable? Is that right?

Probably not 1500's use a D44 axle and 2500's use a D60.
