Well this is awesome
That's not the know how I was talking about. And btw, I worked in my old man's auto parts store/machine shop for 20 + years, so I'm not bragging but I know what the average joe wants in a person behind the counter. Not just someone who knows how to look something up on a computer and looks at you like you have 2 heads when you ask for a certain part. And besides, when you have a store like advance or autozone, you are catering to people who have to try and fix it themselves. Sometimes it's like walking into home depot where most of them don't know what a 2x4 is.
I wish they would put one closer. Its like a half hour in either direction to one.
All I can say is make sure of what brands you are getting, as far as the components that matter go. Most of the time it's worth paying the extra $. A life time warranty doesn't help 400 miles from home with no tools,
. 50 miles from home for that matter. I obviously know you've been doing your motor , and from what I've read your not skimping there, so just be careful of what you skimp on, the most meaningless part can cause a lot of headaches.

The only internal part I have gotten from there is the Melling HV oil pump and screen tube thing. Everything else has been summit, and hughes. Besides the HS rr's I got them used off here and the heads I got from CCH
I know you have bought good stuff, I was just rambling about the other cheap crap they sell (like sensors)that can cause headaches when you think you just replaced the part with a new one. Anyway, I have followed your motor rebuild thread and just wish my truck was in as good a shape (as most the members on here that don't live in the northeast) body, frame, etc wise , because I'd be doing a stroker, trans, and gear upgrade. But I spend too much time and money keeping my calipers form seizing and buying new exhaust,etc.....LOL
Don't know nothin idiots to ASE certified?
I go to a parts store to get parts. I don't expect anything more than that.
If you are disappointed with the idiots, what more were you expecting?
If you are ASE certificated people, what extra info are you providing?

Customer: I'm driving a 2001 dodge ram and I need a fuel filter.
ME: Well sir dodge dosn't have a servicable fuel filter like most vehicles I say The only way to replace the fuel filter is to replace the pressure regulator.
Customer: Well that dosn't make sense how does the fuel get filterd.
Me: Well I'm not sure what dodge was trying to do but, I think that because the tank is
plastic and it is a sealed system there isn't really a need for a fuel filter but, I'm not sure.
Customer: Your a damn idiot I'm calling Oreillys. "Hangs Up"
At wich point a bash the phone on the counter a couple of times.
Or the best one ever from the amazings brains that own a chevy.
Customer: Yea I need a starter for a 350.
Me: What year are you working on and is it a car or truck.
Customer: What are you an idiot they are all the same just go back there and grap me a starter.
....
....
...
GRR
This is where I want to say... Look here you idiot even back in the good old days there is about 4 or 5 differnt starters for a 350 and now that we have the new vehicles there is about 15 you moron.
But instead I pleasently smile and tell him there is a couple differnt ones and I need some more details.
My boss was talking to one of these brains who was insitiant that they were all the same. So my boss said he would have it on the counter for him. He then grapped 4 differnt starters for the 350 in t 70 year range. When customer came in he told you can pick any one of these starter as they are all for a 350 and according to you they will all work however there will be no return on it if it dosen't work. I laghed my *** off.
I think the worst is when the customer comes in and says my car won't start. I ask if the battery has been checked. They say no and then say they think it's the fuel filter. I explain to them that if it's just clicking it's probably the battery. They look at me stupid and they had some funny jolting last week at that means it has to be the fuel filter. I say yup your right let me go grap it. Two days later they come back with the damn filter stinking of gas and say it's defective. They say the car started but the second time it just clicked. I tell you should the battery checked and they decline of course. I replace the filter. Two more days go buy and the guy comes in to by some car wash stuff. I ask him how the car is running. He says oh I went to autozone and they told me it was the battery so I had it replaced and now it drives great. I don't know why you didn't tell me it was the battery..... grrrrrr
The list goes on. Basaclly my point is there is so many differnt vehicles out there and we are not mechanics by any means. Don't expect the parts counter guy to know everything about every vehicle out there. Sometimes you'll go and get lucky because your talking to the one guy in the store that knows how to spell automobile and the next time your lucky if the guy can even put a sentence together.
I'm not saying this is the case with you or anything and I'm deffinetly not saying that I know everything but, what kills me and ruins my whole day is idiot customers who don't know what the hell they are talking about but, think they know exactly what they are talking about. Then when I start to ask questions to calrify they act like I'm the retartd. For example..... This one kills me everytime it happens. Someone calls in and it goes like this...

A "FRELLIN" MEN to that...
look, we're not mechanics, and just because I can field strip a Dana 44 and tear a 69 Roadrunner down to it's shell and put it back together doesn't mean I know how to do the brakes on your Toyota. I sell manuals to show you how to fix your ride, just like I have manuals for mine. If you don't want to invest 20 bucks to educate yourself, and buy a decent of tools, I can't help you.
Yes, I know how brakes work, and the difference betwen a 20.00 set of brake pads and a 70.00 set of pads, and more importantly why you might want them. I can look up parts as accurately as the information I've been given, and if I don't ask all the right questions shame on me. But if you don't have the answers...the accuracy of my job decreases significantly. Shame on you!
Y'know, when I was at Autozone, they let me take the ASE as a joke, because part time guys can't take the test for real. I passed it with flying colors. They still wouldn't give me a patch. SO that ASE thing doesn't mean crap to me.
I've been in that Chevy starter mess before myself... and a few others as well. But the guys who want to borrow or rent socket sets and wrenches crack me up as well.
But the Darwin award goes to the shoplifter who I caught trying to shove a battery charger into his pants hed unzipped and unbuckled his belt for. now the guy had the NERVE to deny he was taking it, so I says..."Okay, if you're not trying to steal it, then you're attempting to commit a sexual act with it in public, and what do you think the cops will say to that?!" Maybe its funnier if you were standing there...

NO no no you didn't offend anyone. I was just saying that some times the parts counters guy gets just as frustrated with the customer as some of the customers do with the parts counters guys. It just depends on who you talk to at the counter.
Dessert Dog
Oh yea that cracks me up when people want to barrow socket sets. The worst is when they end up buying a set they go out and make them dirty as hell and then have the nerve to try and bring them back saying they didn't work.
