Did replacing solenoid or TCC work with 1740 code?

After buying this truck a short time ago I'm beginning to learn a lot about Dodge transmissions. I've been getting the 1740 code and have been told it's a Solenoid or the TCC. Truck shifts fine and does not surge...yet. It's got only 63K on it, but this reappearing code is driving me nuts. QUESTION: has anyone with the same problem replaced either part? and if so what were the long-term results. Is it only a matter of time before this tranny craps out on me and I'll need to rebuild? Or can I just ignore the code and drive it?

i just did this this weekend... go to dodge dealer and buy O/D soleniod about $150 go to local parts store and buy trans filter $10 and 6qts. of Valvoline ATF+4 $5.49 and take off the pan and pull the solenoid out and put new in. when you are done disconnect neg. battery cable this will clear it from the ECU. its about a 3hour job.

Thanks MA. I may try it soon. Doesn't seem too bad to do. Hope that is the cure for it. Anyone else try this?

I had the 1740 code and as you stated it was the TCC. After the $1800 tranny rebuild it fixed mine. The Tranny mech is a local shop I had a few minor unrelated probs occur after the rebuild but mine runs fine now. If you search TCC or P1740 on this forum it has alot of returns and people with the same issue. Some have had many trips to the tranny shop before finally changing the TCC for a positive fix. When I finally decided to fix mine I was driving about 65 down the HWY and to my surprise the tranny did not respond to my pressing on the gas. If this does happen to you drive it like you do when it's over heating and do not let the Tranny reach operating temp. If it gets hot it will activate the TCC and you'll be stuck. Hit the gas get to 70 or 80 and shut it off coast then when you slow to 20 - 30 repeat the process but don't lock the steering wheel when you shut it off for obvious reasons. Hopefully MAJohns response works sounds alot cheaper. Good luck.

Thanks all....I think I'll try the solenoid first. Is the TCC rebuild considered to be a tranny rebuild? If not what was the cost of replacing the TCC?

Relacing it is not a tranny rebuild , it's just one of many components that go bad or are part of the transmission. And read post #2.

Yep Zman and MAJons are correct this is only a component in the tranny. Although my local tranny guy that rebuilt mine said as many on this forum have said if you go that far into the tranny it could be several things and a rebuild is the only way to be sure you get it fixed. if your willing do as the other guys suggest first (it's cheaper) but a rebuild on mine cost $1800
if your like mine your in for some frustration but these guys helped me. A rebuild will get the code and the TCC but it's most definately NOT your only route. But it was the only way mine was fixed. try the cheapest fixes first.

Well, new development today. Took it to work which is about a 30 mile one way drive. Mostly interstate. As I exited the highway and on to a secondary road the OD/off light appeared. A short time later the CEL came on. I let it sit for a short time and restarted it. OD/off light disappeared, but not the CEL. Since I teach a Vo-tech school, I had a friend clear the code...which not surprisingly was the 1740 code. It read tcc, tcc solenoid, overdrive solenoid. Drove truck home and again towards the end of my trip it came out of overdrive and OD/off light appeared. No CEL yet. hopefully I can get to the overdrive solenoid this weekend.
