Default Windows are dead, little help

OK for some time now both of my windows have not been working correctly. to get them to roll up you need to help the window along. Weird thing is they both started at the same time.
I've been limping them along for some time now but with summer on its way and me refusing to run the AC and get even worse gas mileage I reach out to you for help.

Should I just replace the motors? Could it be something in the switch (but both switches have the same results on the passenger side).

I've hit it with a hammer, there is obviously power going to them since they will roll down and up (with help).

Just wanted to check in before changing the motors.

Thanks for the help
Nick

It could be a loss in power to the motor, but I would think that that would be a very small chance of that being the problem. (Unless you have been wiring up some stuff)
I would come closer to thinking it is the motors themselves. It is odd though that they both started to act up at the same time. Might want to swap relays and see if that helps (or fuse) Both are found in the dash mounted fuse box.

The passenger switch acts as a slave to the driver side switch. It's possible you have a weak electrical connection in the driver side switch

Just some food for thought, but my drivers side window started to periodically quite working a while back as well. I could push the window button with no avail, but if I punched the door panel while holding the button it would work again. Then it would eventually quit again. Hmm.

Then swapped the door panel switch with a friend... it worked in his truck, but his didn't in mine.

Finally took the door panel off one day to investigate. Everything looked fine, but the dang thing didn't work. Then I figured out that if I tapped the motor (ever so lightly with a wrench), it would work again... then eventually quit again.

Replaced motor, been good ever since.

Although I am guessing it is the window motors, it seams very odd they both went out together. I would swap the switch out with a friend just to test that first...

A bad ground wire somewhere could do that as well.

I know Jeep Grand Cherokees from 1999-2004 are notorious for pinching off the ground between the driver's door and the frame, resulting in (at first) intermittent failure of the driver's master switch panel on the door and eventually complete failure of it.

Instead of not receiving power to the motor, the ground to the motor might be pinched someplace or otherwise not well connected. I'd test both power and the ground going to the motor before replacing it.

There are two plugs at the doorjamb side of your wiring that goes inside the door and into the truck. You could check to see if the connector is loose.

Ok I'll check connections, ground and see if I can't find a switch to swap out on the drivers side. You think one out of an 05 2500 would have the same connections?

If it is the motor, can I replace just the motor or do I have to change the motor/regulator assembly all in one? (I ask as I see the two different options online but in the manual it says they have to be changed all together.).

I wondered that myself when I was researching during my issues. I found out that the window motor alone is more expensive than the motor/regulator, so I went with the whole setup. It also made it easy to replace. And, when I replaced mine, the motor alone did not appear to removable/replaceable.

But I will say, if you cant roll the window up and down when replacing it, things could be very difficult. Cause the window has to be in a certain area to be able to remove the screws.

I noticed that too (cheaper to get entire assembly), seems odd but thats the way I figured I would go as well (el cheapo right here baby!!).

Lucky for me the window will still go up and down, but like I said it just needs a little help from daddy getting back up.

Should be able to do tests tonight to find out if there is a bad connection/ground/switch or if I'll be ordering the parts and attempting to do this through some stupid access port in the door... like it would have killed them to make that a little bigger.

Update

I just replaced the passenger side window and wwwwwwwoooooooohhhhhooooooooooo I have a window that rolls up and down without help

I'll be replacing the driver's side probably tomorrow but that one doesn't bother me as much since it rolls down with no issue, just needs a little help going back up.

Anyway, it was VERY easy to do! Total of 8 bolts to remove duct tape the window up out of the way and presto, was done much faster than I would have ever guessed.

thanks to everyone for your suggestions and help
