Any ideas what's happening? Suggestions?
How does your fluid look? Could be a sticky pressure regulator valve. I seen them stuck solid before, i needed a pair of vise grips and a vise to get the valve out.Originally Posted by VWandDodge
My transmission has been getting more and more iffy each day/week. Over the winter, even though I would warm it up before driving, it would hesitate to engage into Drive and would take some coaxing. Now, it acts very weak upon takeoff and even acts like it's trying to engage, can't, and then jumps/slams into Drive. When backing out of a parking spot and going from Reverse to Drive, I try to ensure that Drive has engaged, but when applying the throttle, nothing by revs and if I'm not careful it will slam into drive. I know it needs a rebuild and I'm working feverishly to get my little VW back on the road so I can have the Dodge repaired.Any ideas what's happening? Suggestions?
When you put it in drive without pressing the accelerator the pumps output is minimal so if something is stuck it wont move like it should. So when you mash the gas the pump output spikes and all at once forces whatever is stuck to move.
Or you could have excessive clearance in the forward clutch, if the problem is not apparent in reverse.

What I usually do is back out at work (which seems to work fine) and then stick the truck in neutral. I rev the engine a few times and then engage in Drive. I gently work the throttle at which point if I do not feel the transmission engage then I back off quickly. Sometimes, when I have backed off, I can feel the transmission engage, but it acts rather lights for the first 50 or so feet. I have to stop at a stop sign, and then I proceed again at which time it feels as if the transmission acts like it's free wheeling and then it will firmly engage.Originally Posted by MonteC

I didn't have a chance to check the fluid today, but about 2 months ago, it was fine while still behaving like this. I am long overdue for a fluid change; however, I had anticipated having my VW running by now. I just discovered today that the wiring harness in it is fried and will need to be replaced.
OK, this has been getting progressively worse and this morning my truck threw a P0740. Now, I'm sweating bullets and trying to determine if changing sensors, filter, and fluid will buy me some time or if I'm going to have to bite the bullet and go for a complete rebuild.
Well, after having to drive yesterday, the problem is getting worse. The tach will jump around from 1200RPM to 2900RPM around 40-50mph when I'm stuck behind people who don't understand how to drive the posted speed limit of 50mph. To further aggravate the problem slight inclines cause the intermittent shifting and hesitation as well.
I had to source a Borg Warner shift solenoid from O'Reilly as they didn't have the AC Delco part in stock, and that had to be ordered from the warehouse with it arriving later this morning.
When returning home last night, the truck reeked heavily of transmission fluid. It was so bad, I almost thought I had a leak. A quick inspection this morning yielded no such leak. I checked the fluid, and although it does not smell burnt, it smells old.
I'm hoping that replacing the solenoid will buy me a couple of weeks of driving until I get my other car going. Then, I'll do a complete teardown and rebuild of the transmission.

Nope. Checked all that and it's fine. The rear main is leaking like no tomorrow and I can't wait to get that replaced. Originally Posted by aim4squirrels

Got the sensor and some trans fluid from O'Reilly earlier today. Later I will replace the solenoid, top off the fluid, and cross my fingers.
OK, here is the shift solenoid I bought for the truck. Is this the correct part (Torque Converter Lockup)?
