Trans Slams on Takeoff -- Getting Worse
I am not trying to high jack the thread, but did not want to start a new topic. I have recently bought a 1996 ram 1500, 5.9, 2wd, she erratically slams hard going into reverse (generally will not go right into reverse, have to step on the gas then it slams), and around 50 - 60 kms/per hour feels like there is no pull when stepping on the gas. If you step on it a little harder it shifts and feels normal again. Does not do either of these things consistent. I suspect it may be overheating as well.

Well, I talked to one of our resident transmission experts today. Thanks to MonteC for his willingness to talk with me. Based on my description of the fluid, the truck's operation, and mileage (187,000) the verdict is:
TOAST
So, now I have to line up a repair shop to fix it as well as some wheels.
All I needed was for it to last until the end of August.

Yeah, but that's how it goes. I'm positive the transmission has never been worked before. I am also certain that I'm the third or fourth owner. If you ever saw my engine build thread you know that a PO abused this truck. I know the engine is strong, so now I have to get the transmission there.
Thanks. I had the truck hauled to the transmission shop this morning. One of the first things they recommended was an external cooler and they're game for the shift kit and some other upgrades you and I discussed. The trans should be dropped and ready for my inspection when I get off work tomorrow.
Ballpark prices are dangerous and difficult to be quoting until the actual carnage has been seen. Either way, I'm looking at (knock on wood) $1800 for a rebuild, with extra for the cooler. They're also going to replace my leaky ear main
Huh? Where***been? I had brass CORE PLUGS installed when I rebuilt the engine.
