Very sorry for your dissapointment. I know how bad it feels... back in my college days I rebuilt a motor with my last pennies. Kit had two different gaskets for the oil pump, and, I selected the wrong one. The MG garage felt so sorry for me they turned the crank again and put it back together on their dime.

I still salute that location down in Monterey 40 years later. Hope you catch a break.

If you reused the old torque convertor and didn't drain it and flush it out and refill it with new fluid that is probably what happened to your tranny. You should never reuse a convertor. They store up all that burnt and debris filled fluid and as soon as you start the vehicle they distribute that gunk throughout your nice new tranny. If you are extremely lucky you may have only clogged the filter or gunked up the valve body. You could try and drop the valve body and put a new filter in it. I am not super familiar with the convertors on these trannys but if there is a drain plug in it take it out and stick a couple of coffee stirrer straws in there to create an air pocket so it will drain easier. It is an option if you want to give it a try but there is no guarantee it will work. You could also flush out the cooler lines again with fresh fluid to try and flush out the crap that is in your tranny now.

Shawn,

Did you completely tear the barrel, overdrive and valve body apart and clean everything?

The reason I ask is that I rebuilt my 46RE back in March and I didn't find the culprit until I got into the very tailend of the OD unit (bad overrunning clutch).

Also, speeddemon is right, never use an old TC.

You might be lucky in that if you drop and clean the VB and change the filter, you might be running again. Wouldn't hurt to try, since it ain't working now anyway.

Everyone is right about not using the old TC, but that would still have nothing to do with it not shifting. The shavings would eventually burn up the tranny but it would still shift when you first drove it after the rebuild. My guess is you have something screwed up in the valve body, one missing check ball can screw everything up.

While I agree with silvermach2002, you may have flushed all the debris into the valve body while filling the the tranny with fluid. If you had the truck running while filling it you almost definitely will have flushed the junk into the tranny from the torque converter.

We completely rebuilt the main case, valve body, OD unit

Found the culprit too, it was the overrunning clutch in the back of the main case, it was pretty much gone. There were alot of metal shavings when we first pulled the transmission apart.

I will pull the valve body out and we'll go through that again.

Torque converters are $100 or less through a trans part company,so why would you cheat yourself and waste all that time and not buy one ? And the stupid check valve in the tranny line will get you every time !
