1997 5.2 tranny problem.
I'm new here, been reading for awhile but this is my first post. I did a search and didn't come up with anything, so here goes. I have a 1997 2x4 ram 1500 with a 5.2 that ran fine but now if i put it in drive or any other gear besides 1st. It will just rev and not go anywhere. If i put it in 1st. It will drive . Any help is greatly appreciated.
I THINK IT COULD BE ONE OF THESE 2 SOLUTIONS. WHAT DO YOU THINK?
STUCK IN LOW GEAR (WILL NOT UPSHIFT)
1. Throttle Linkage Mis-adjusted/Stuck. 1. Adjust linkage and repair linkage if worn or damaged. Check for binding cable or missing return spring.
2. Gearshift Linkage Mis-adjusted. 2. Adjust linkage and repair linkage if worn or damaged.
3. Governor Component Electrical Fault. 3. Check operating pressures and test with DRB® scan tool, repair faulty component.
4. Front Band Out of Adjustment. 4. Adjust Band.
5. Clutch or Servo Malfunction. 5. Air pressure check operation of clutches and bands. Repair faulty component.
OR
HAS FIRST/REVERSE ONLY (NO 1-2 OR 2-3 UPSHIFT)
1. Governor Circuit Electrical Fault. 1. Test using DRB® scan tool and repair as required.
2. Valve Body Malfunction. 2. Repair stuck 1-2 shift valve or governor plug.
3. Front Servo/Kickdown Band Damaged/Burned. 3. Repair/replace.

Nope. Those are implying that you have first gear in the drive position. You have no engagements in any range except manual 1.
When did this problem start happening?
I would disconnect the cooler, and see if it is plugged up, remove the check valve while you are there. If the cooler is pluged up it will not get a charge.
You may want to drop the pan and see what is going on inside there. Could have a broken hard part.
Lastly i would try going through the valvebody and looking for stuck valves.

will do. I drove it today, started off in 1st. And shifted to drive it runs perfect through the gears, but when I stop I have to start again in 1st. I'm going to check the cooler Tomm. Then I'm going to drop the pan for a fluid and filter change. Do you think I should adjust the bands as well?
