Default drum brakes

is the adjuster arm supposed to be touching the star wheel or be just off it? i just did my brakes and the drivers was off enough that you could spin the wheel backwards without it grabbing and the passenger side was touching and preventing it from spinning backwards. both sides wore down the same amount but only on the rear pad, which i thought was wierd. the pad toward the front of the truck didn't have a lot of wear (about 1/8" thick) and the back pads were about 1/32" thick

The arm should be touching the adjuster. And your shoe wear is about right.

thanks. so now i need to pop the driver wheel back off and bend that thing a little bit. thats the same side that i had to redo everything in there a year or two ago. i pulled up to a pond and when i walked past the back wheel i looked and saw brake dust on the rim. fished for a while then babied it home, when i got the drum off i saw what was left of the springs and the adjuster after they fell on the ground while i was pulling the drum. so i guess that arm not touching let the adjuster retract and it fell off. then with it not holding the bottom of the pads the springs just popped off and got ground into oblivion.

If the arm is not bent from it's original shape then there is another problem, like the cable is too short or it's not in the right place. Or everything is backwards, etc...

i'm sure it isn't backwards, i'll mess with it and see if i can get it to sit right. i think its got something to do with the cable, flipped around or too long or something.

Make sure the guide plate for the cable is in the correct hole in the shoe, and I'm sure you know that one of the springs also goes in that hole to hold the plate.

old

new

i know the spring on the adjuster arm is flipped around on the new ones but that shouldn't matter. i believe i tried it both ways but i'm not posative.

i think the guide for the cable needs to be rotated up a little, thats the only difference i see.
