Your volunteer firefighter is right about one thing at least; fuel tanks with less fuel ARE more prone to explode. It takes fuel and air to promote combustion and if you ever studied how fuel systens work gas doesn't burn near as redily as gas VAPORS. As for the fuel tank being plastic it probably was on an 01 dodge but not all fuel tanks are, many cars use metal gas tanks, but I do believe the 01 Ram uses a plastic tank if I recall correctly. A short in the tank COULD have caused this but not likely, as there would also have to be a fualt in the ignition switch as well, for power to be supplied to the pump when the key is off. Also, the truck was on fire before the fuel tank ignited. This is, however, a nine year old truck, and you have no idea what the previous owner(s) may have done to it. This sucks in a major way, but I seriously doubt Dodge is responsible. you had an alarm system in it. Was that factory? I've seen a LOT of problems (and one minor fire)caused by badly installed (or just crappy) alarms. Again, sorry this happened

Wow, you owed 15K for an 01 that you have had for a year? No wonder it spontaneously combusted. That was a smoking hot deal you must have got.

J/K

Sorry to hear about your loss. That is a risk you take when you buy a used car. You never know what the other person did with it. I would seriously dobubt that you will get anywhere with Chrysler. As part of their bankruptcy they are able to get out of paying previous claims. So even if you could prove it was something that was their fault, I doubt you would get anything.

100k miles and you wanna sue because you did not have the proper insurance coverage to cover the incident? I could see if it was a few weeks old and a few thousand miles. But your truck is well broke in and snuff happens. I hate to sound like a dick but sounds like you just want someone else to pay for your mistake.

Life lesson- if you have 15k loan on something at lease carry full coverage, in Missouri your not allowed to have anything but full if you have a lien over 1k.
