PLEEZ NEED HELP. 01 dodge ram 1500 burned to the ground
first... the gas tank ignited. if it had "blown" the sheet metal of the bed on the drivers side would be totally ripped apart. now that being said, when they do ignite then can pack quite a punch, which would explain the open door, and some warping of the bed side... As stated before, todays tanks, especially the ones on these trucks are plastic, and designed not to "blow" in a fire. normally what happens is the tank gets too hot and begins melting making a release for pressure long before the gasses from the fuel ignite. and it is the fumes, or gasses, that are what cause explosions, not the liquid fuel itself. some manufactures are even putting pressure vents on thier tanks now to vent the gasses in case of a fire.
Trust me if the tank had "blown" it would have shook your house. there was a fire in a shop I used to work at... the fire started next to the shops old panel van. it still had a metal tank and about 1/4th of it was full. the fire quickly spread and as I was running to the fire with another extinguisher the tank went.... 5 feet away and it dang near put me on my back... that was the closest I got to the fire, and I ended up with singed hair and clothes.
also could the fire have been caused by something smoldering like a cigarette possibly in the cab that was in your bed?

i'm not trying to disagree with you at all here and i see what youre saying but what i thought was the tank blowing up blew me on my *** to and i was (guess here) probably about 8-10 ft away. also the tank had about an eighth left in it maybe a little less so it was pretty much empty. also to answer your' question about the cigarette i don't smoke and i had a sprayed in bed liner the ..."wasn't suppose to burn"...
That's the exact point I was trying to make earlier.
If you look at it logically gas in of itself does not burn it is the vapors of gas that burns. The flashpoint is realtivley high, however things do not randomly burn with out some sort acelerant. You have to look at the fire triangle to understand how a fire will start. Let's say it was an electical fire then that means you fuse system failed (or you or someone else bypassed them)you left something turned on, or you do noot know what you are doing. Electrical fires in vehicles that are turned off andd parked are very rare.
As for how much you paid for the vehicle all I can say is you ripped yourself off, I mean 15,000 for an 01 ram.

look at the thread getting warm in here that is like a 2000 you might have something with the 2000-2001 burning up.

As far as that video goes, we have no idea what the situation was.
I've seen people use their hoods as storage before. I even saw a video clip once of one guy who kept a gas can full of gasoline next to the engine under his hood, along with several rags, blankets, and miscellaneous pieces of clothing.
Not saying you did that flander, just saying that who knows what the situation was with the truck in that video.

Let me start by saying, I am not a fire expert. With that said, I burned a truck to the ground at 16.
(Ask me about it some other time)
Any way, my accerlant of choice was diesel. I poured the whole cab down with it, and doused the bed rails when I got done.
I poured a fuse trail of sorts about 20 feet away with gas.
I watched that thing burn to the ground. It took about 15 min for the paint to burn off and the tires too.
My point is, I have seen one burn like that. I saw it in real time, I also have seen the after math. Your truck had some kind of flammable liquid poured all over it.
I have some pics of the truck that I did, and will try to find them.
I have also seen fires that were caused by a short, and 90% of the time, they don't snow ball into that big of a fire.
I am sorry for your loss, but I don't feel sorry for you considering the position you put your parents in. I love my truck, but keep in mind, you drive a hunk of metal that's it. These trucks wont last forever.

I thought there was an order of protection saying you couldn't come within 100 feet of any truck? You are definitely staying away from mine.
It never went on any kind of police record. Like I have stated many times before, I went did all of my stupid **** before I turned 18. All I can tell you is when you smack a tree at 85MPH, it makes you do some really funky ****, and take advice from people you wouldn't do so normally.
There was no order of protection. I had two months of probation, and that was it.
And really, I don't care what you think. It was a very stupid thing I did, and I still catch hell for it 5 years later. I am still called torch by people in town. There is not a day go by that I don't think about it. Wondering what would have happened if I hadn't hit that tree.... Would I have slammed down a 20 foot straight drop? Would I have swerved the other direction and obliterated a house? If I had hit that house, what if there were people in it? What if I killed a Mom, or a Dad? What if I turned a happy little family into a torn one? What if I killed a kid? What if I never took the truck out for a joy ride? What if I just told the owner what had happened and never set it on fire? These are the things that congeal in my brain every single damn time I crawl into the cab of a vehicle to drive.
You can take your idea of me not coming near your truck and shove it. I don't care. I take that kind of talk very serious. I have no reason to touch your truck, and more than likely wouldn't touch it if given the opportunity.
The whole point to my post in this thread was sharing my idea that an accelerant was used to burn this truck to the ground. That's it.
Have a good day,
Chris.

I just thought of something else....
How do you know that this was something that I got into trouble with the law?
How could you know that this wasn't some junk piece of **** vehicle I had laying around, and I just wanted to see if they blow up like they do in Hollywood? I will be the first to tell you that I was wrong, but you know what? I made it right. The man whose truck I lifted; received a brand new truck. Bought and paid for out of my college funding. And If I remember right, he got one hell of an upgrade in vehicles. Think he got a 2001 F-350 Diesel IIRC.
