New K&N FIPK CAI on 2001 Ram 5.9
I just installed a K&N FIPK on my 2001 Ram with the 5.9 and I love it. I read all the posts and I know that a bunch of guys here are going to the 14x3, but I wanted to be sure that I wouldn't have a problem with the emissions test. I test drove it briefly this evening and could tell the difference immediately. I bought it from Summit for $230. You gotta get the Trick Flow Cold Air Intake kit to get the good price. The K&N brand is $320, but the Trick Flow is the same thing. The part numbers in the instructions sheets are the same. The intake tube and filter even says K&N. Like I stated earlier, I could tell the difference right away. It's not real loud, but you can tell the difference. When you hit about 3000 rpm, it sounds like the 3rd and 4th barrel on a carb has just opened up. It really moves now. Of course, it wasn't a slouch to begin with. I'll post some mpg's in the next week or two. I know that I was getting 11.2 before the mod. I could increase that by one mpg if I turned off the AC for the drive home from work.
i lost about 1mpg with the k&n cai vs the drop in k&n and mine cost 0$ (i have the 14x3 k&n now). a friend of mine got a ram and had it for a few months before he decided that it was not worth fixing and traded it in, but before he traded it in he called me and told me to come over and get what i wanted off it. if i had more than about an hour before he went to the dealer i would have stripped that puppy down to the frame.
OP: Welcome to DF!
If you think your FIPK is awesome, try adding a larger filter like a Spectre...you will never use the original again.
Also you'll want inspect your tube for cracking 2 or 3 times a year. You probably have the updated tube, but it cracks as well, and the pieces snap off on the inside and can get in your throttle body.

I've had my foot in it a little more since the mod, so I may not get any increase in mileage until I start behaving. Or maybe none at all. I needed to do something because my air intake was broken at the bottom where it sits on the stud and the tabs on the back of the top cover were broken. This is the first performance mod I've put on a vehicle and I'm real pleased with it. It isn't much louder than stock until you get into it, but you can hear the subtle differences at all engine speeds if you listen for it. Once you normalize to it, you don't really notice it though. I'll keep an eye on the tube for cracks.
