Default painting roof advice

the roof paint on my 95 ram is in really bad shape. it almost looks rusted, really small flaky pieces of paint left. its just a work truck but i still want to repaint the roof. i was wondering if anyone had a quick advice on what to do. i figure i would just sand the roof down to metal, and use a spray can primer, base, and clear. im not looking for anything pretty. just a roof that matches the rest of the truck. thanks.

Sounds like a plan, just make sure you get all the loose stuff off obviously.

Make sure you remove ALL of the rust before you paint. Also apply several light coats of primer and color. This will make for a smoother finish without runs.
Finally, the more time you put into a proper masking job, the better the final product will be.

Take your time and Good Luck!

preparation IS the most important part. now you said its a work truck, so i would imagine you're trying to paint the truck to look ok, instead of showing it off...just do what you have to do to make it work and worth while. if you need pointers on painting or the whole process of doing so, pm me.

I am going to have to do the same to a roof, hood and fender before I get rust. It's (Sun) through the clear and really working the paint on mine

make sure its a good way away from other vehicles, spray paint can put a nice coating on other cars if they're close enough. my dad wouldn't let me paint my camaro in the front yard because he's seen cars at his work that were victims of someone using spray paint a little ways away from their cars. also a flap wheel for a grinder makes short work of stripping paint as long as you don't use any pressure on it so it won't dig in.

I dont know if its been discussed on this forum before, but I am currently doing the $50 rustoleum foam roller repaint deal thats a lot of people have been doing. 3 coats in and I already think its gonna be very acceptable and better than the old peeling clear coat factory job.
