camshaft position sensor
The check engine light came on and i pulled code 340, which is camshaft pos. sens. i think its located in the distributor. its a 1997, 5.9 gass engine. manufactured in 2/97. when i called the part store they told me that my truck didnt have one. he said they came out in 98. im a little confused! if i indeed do have one and its in the distributor, is it hard to change? i can barely see the distributor in the back. do i have to take the distributor out to change it? thanks for your help

Yes it has one. It is in the distributor. I have never replaced mine but I believe most leave the dist. in place. If the dist. is moved it needs to be checked with a special scan tool as it controls the fuel injection syncronization. Timing is controlled by the computer.
lift the cap, pull the rotor off, then the cam sensor is a plastic ring with a wire attached sitting on the bottom of the distributer, just pick it up, unplug it and replace. the parts store calls it a pick up or a stator. make sure when you change it that you don't pinch the wire under the distributer cap.

if you do replace the cap a lot of people on here like the brass caps and rotors. and to make it easier you can back up a hill or on some ramps to put your trucks nose in the dirt and it makes it a lot easier to get to the distributer.
That there is the kinda tip I love to read. Thanks
thanks for all the input, i put the wrong manufacture date ,so i changed it. your right about reaching the distributor. my truck is lifted ,so me being 6"-9" doesn't help much
