Default tranny help

im looking for direction for a new tranny. i have a 96 2500 4wd hd 360 with a auto with od. i bought this truck new with 4 miles on it. i now have 210,000 on the truck and the tranny went. i had the truck towed to my garage that ive been using for years. the choices i had to choose from was a used tranny, remanufactured tranny or a new tranny. based on the costs i was quoted the new tranny seemed to be the best option in my mind. i was told today that the new tranny was not available any more and one couldnt be found. i told them i find it hard to believe that there isnt one out there omewhere and they said it had something to do with the computor modules i dont know how hard my garage had looked for one so i figured id look for myself with hopes that i could find one for them. this truck has been the best truck (daily driver) i had ever owned and has never let me down since buying it. i have too much money in the front end just to throw it away now and get another one. the engine only goes through a qt of oil between changes and has no oil leaks nor does it smoke. i need to find a tranny asap because im driving around in my 51 6100 chevy dump and my 40 gmc ac250 flatbed which both are antiques.

maybe i posted this in the wrong place and it will end up in the right place if this is not the correct area of the site for this type of post.

Nope, this is the correct place. Welcome to the forum!

There are two transmission places I've heard almost nothing but good about:
APS Precision Manufacturing, LLC
Dr. Evil Performance Transmissions

you might find a "new" transmission from dodge, but it would cost more than the whole truck is worth.

a used junkyard transmission is a gamble. while yours remarkably lasted 210k, most of them don't, and the odds of getting a good one are low. even if you do get one thats not already shot, its likely to have all the original oem problems. so its not going to last long.

you might find someone with a parted out truck that already spent a bundle on the rebuilt tranny, and would dearly love to find someone willing to pay $1000 for it. you won't get any warranty on this.

another option is to buy a rebuild from a big company, with a big WARRANTY, including autozone, advance, rockauto, APS, Evil, Jasper, etc. your local shop can install it.

another option is to have your truck towed to a local transmission shop, and turn the whole project over to them, and pay close attention to what they intend to charge for labor, and parts, and exactly-- what are those parts. and exactly-- what is the warranty. for the $ its going to cost, settle for no less than 3yr, 36-50k miles.

another option is to get your local garage to remove/install your tranny, and have them take it to a local trans expert for the rebuild. most shops that don't have a trans expert do this regularly. however - a huge pitfall can occur down the road in 1 day, 1 week, 1 month where the transmission acts up, and the local shop doesn't want to become part of the warranty process.

if you have lots of faith in your local garage, ask them what they recommend.
whatever you decide -
have a very clear understanding of the cost, in writing.
and a very clear understanding of the warranty, in writing. this can become a big and expensive nightmare.

just curious whether you're close to Summerville, SC or not... if so its your lucky day. go see montec.

edit. just passing along hearsay, but monte says APS and Evil are overpriced by about $1000.

thanks for the replies. everyone is amazed of the mileage i have gotten out of this ram, its a real mule. i said i was going to run this truck until the wheels fell off and i got my moneys worth out of it. being close to allentown,pa with all the salt that they throw down the body is just starting to show the results of it. how do i determine the tranny that in it with the vin # being 1BF-KF26Z8TS-517693.

my mechanic loves the vin #s on my dump 14UVL and AC252 on my 40 gmc.
