At each end of the caliper there is a rubber boot. Inside that rubber boot are the steel pins referred to. These are the pins that thread into the caliper mounting bracket and hold the caliper in place over the rotor. The bores they go into allow the caliper to slide from side to side as the pads wear and as the piston pressure is applied via braking. This makes the calipers float on these pins. Over time, the pins get galled or the boots get torn and allow dirt and debris to contaminate the cavity, which results in the caliper not sliding on the pins very well and then the pads drag on the rotor and wear unevenly and/or cause the vehicle to pull to one side when braking. It's a good idea to change these pins with the pads and to check every so often to make sure they are not sticking. My local Autozone and Pep Boys stock them in a package that includes new boots, so they are easy to get and cost less than $10 per side.

Do these pins you're talking about come completely out? When I've taken my calipers off before, I don't remember them coming out. Is there a special way to take them out or what? DYI?

Actually, the pins are 2 pieces. There is the Torx-headed bolt that actually holds the caliper in place. It passes through the alignment pins, which are housed in the rubber boots. You have to push them out manually once the caliper is off the bracket.
