Opinion on Steelies
Too far. Drat.
Lol. Thanks anyway though!
Are the standard steelies (not the spare tire rim) as strong as the alluminums?
What's the largest tire I can confidently run on the stock rim (by confidently, I mean, not so huge that the side wall is bulging over the edge of the rim)?

Here's the truck:

And in this shot, you can see the tilting front wheels and the backspacing on the wheels:

The wheels are not tilted much, but they're tilted enough to cause this on the tires (notice the uneven inner tread = cupping):

I've never liked how far the wheels are pushed out but kept them cause I'm po and planned on eventually adding sick looking fender flares to widen the body over the tires. Fender flare are expensive so it's likely they will not happen in the foreseeable future

Dude, your truck looks good the way you have it. I wouldn't go the steelie route. Makes you truck look like a base model or a work truck. Why don't you keep your rims and just go down a size or two and see what difference that makes. That should reduce the stress on your system. Go to a local tire place that sells used tires and for like $20 each you can get new (used) tires and give it a try for a while. It can't cost more than changing rims.
Dude, I just looked at your last pic and noticed you have Gooyears. That is your problem right there! I have never liked Goodyear. My truck came with Goodyears and they were horrible. Could never keep it aligned. It was aligned like 20 times and failed each time (kept wearing unevenly and pulling). Finally I replaced them at 20K and got Michellins, what a difference they made. The ride was better, the handling was better and I was able to get an alignment with no trouble at all. You tires are your problem, not your rims!

I have a hard time believing your wear problems are related to how far the wheels stick out from the fenders. Here's mine:

These wheels have been on my truck for more than 75k miles with no ill effects on anything.

I agree with Miami Son, your wear problem is not necessarily caused by the wheels. And by that pic, I doesn't look like much of a wear problem anyway. Maybe check your alignment out?
I have ran 15x12's on my truck for probably 80k miles of the 160k on the truck (dont use in the winter) and have never had a single wear problem. But yes, they do wear out ball joints and wheel bearings much faster.
And looking at those pics, you only have a 10" wide wheel. A 12" wide wheel will balloon a 12.5" wide tire out much more than those are... trust me, I ran that setup on several sets of tires.
This is a 12" wide wheel...
