"Fire in the Hole"
First of all hello everyone at Dodge Forum! As you can tell by my user name, yes I’m in Florida. I'm in the far western part of the panhandle close to Pensacola beach. The weather here has been nasty hot & dry.
My wife has always been nuts for Dodge trucks. The one she has now is starting to have some issues. I told her that because of the way the internet is now a day we should be able to get some help from people like you on problems with the truck. Neither one of us likes letting a mechanic touch our trucks unless we feel certain that they are fixing the true problem so from time to time we will ask opinions from some of you to help us figure out what to do. So let’s get started.
Her 98 Dodge Ram 1500 4X4 has a wire coming from the ignition switch inside of the steering column that over heats when the dash blower fan is used. The higher the fan speed, the hotter the wire gets. One day the fan was put on high and the wire started smoking and just about caught on fire. The wiring diagram for the truck does not show us the blower fan or speed switch details so I am not able to trace everything to maybe find the problem. Can anyone give us an ideal on what could be causing this to happen? Any help would be great!

Could quite possibly be a bare wire arcing on something. Albeit part of the frame, or any other piece of metal that will complete the circuit, and heat the wire up like you are experiencing.
Up at the top of this section is a thread called DIY links.
Found here: https://dodgeforum.com/forum/2nd-gen...diy-links.html
In the thread is yet another link that has a shop manual download on it. It's for a 2001, but it should give you a pretty good idea on which wires to start tracking down.
I will warn you about that manual though, you need to be careful with it since it's actually the shop manual for the 2500/3500 Rams. It's good for motor and wiring work, but brakes, suspension, axles, and things along that line will be different.
