Unhappy Reverse lights won't work unless,..

I pull and hold the shifter on the colum almost to the neutral position.
How do I fix it so I don't have to hold the shifter like that?
At night, I can't see a thing backing down my long driveway. I already
have a fog-lamp hooked up to the rear bumper that lights up nice and bright
but, I sure wish I didn't have to mess with the shifter every time!
