Unless you have something else wrong, you can go to the DIY links and find the steering box adjustment thread. It should help tighten it up.

identify the source of the play. have an assistant turn the wheel back and forth while you put your hands on all the moving parts.

if its the 2 halves of the shaft, you'll need a new shaft or that "rock solid" bushing kit.
if its in the u-joint, you'll need a new shaft, or some kind of replacement rig.
if the shaft is ok, but its in the steering box, its an easy adjustment. see DIY.
if its deeper down in the pitman arm or tie rods, they'll need replacement.

suggest you follow advice above steering shaft assy first.
the adjustment to gear box as a last option.

i'd look to adjust the steering box first. it doesn't cost anything and only takes 15 minutes. it removed about 4-5 inches of steering wheel wheel play from mine and made it like a new truck. mine was almost undriveable before.

i like some play in my steering wheel. my g/f's 07 sentra's steering is overly responsive, if you lift a cheek to break wind you'll end up in the other lane because its so touchy. my trucks steering wheel has to move about an inch before it responds and when it does it is nice and smooth. so when you say that your steering has some play in it how much is a little?

well when i bought my truck the wheel had some play in it, i figured what ever, ill replace the tie rod ends and be fine, did that, and i fund it was the knuckle that goes from the box going up into the shaft, there is a bolt, hold hte steering box to the shaft the goes up into your wheel... it may be loose, it was loose on mine, and then my buddies truck had the same thing.. tightend it right up...
