Default What should i do here guys?

My transmission is going out, it needs a rebuild. I found a transmission on craigslist for (1997 ram, auto) $300 that was supposedly rebuilt 10K miles ago. Should i pick this one up or just suck it up and try to rebuild my own transmission? I have the 46RE by the way.

Can the seller show documentation that the tranny was rebuilt? Is it still covered by any warranty? If the answers are yes, sounds like a no-brainer to me.

Agreed, a lot of people on craigslist get trannies from junk yards and resell them as "rebuilt".

Exactly. I've seen trannies and transfer cases sold as rebuilt that had simply been spray painted silver. My point was that unless the seller can back up what he says with some documentation that includes a warranty, buying off the internet is probably a bad idea. Too many less-than-honest people out there who will say anything in an ad.

Just bite the bullet and have yours rebuilt with a shift kit on top of it.

*BINGO* Check out my thread that discusses how the truck was slamming on takeoff. It went out over a week ago, when I didn't need it to go out. So, I had it towed to a transmission shop (AAA helps once again) and I got a rental car. The old goober who picked me up started telling me I could "just pay $400 and get a transmission from a junkyard". Um yeah And then I might be stuck with a $400 turd, let alone all of the time to swap out the trans and there wouldn't be a guarantee that it would work. His response was that when I got my truck back that I'd have a $2,000 turd. Again,

Long story short: Sonnax shift kit, external cooler, rebuild torque converter, and Borg Warner bands. Three days and my truck drives and shifts great. Total damage was $1,783 with a 6 month, 6,000 mile warranty. Prices will vary based on location and the amount of work required.

Bite the bullet for peace of mind.

I would not have fun doing it over , but, for $300. I might just go for it myself and install the Sonnax kit and take the chance. Let's face it, money is tight these days. And not everyone rips people off.

If he has the time, money, and inclination, I'd agree with this assessment. I was toying with getting a trans, building it, and then swapping it out when the time was right.

I found a trans with paperwork of the rebuild that includes a one year warranty. Guy is asking $800. So this warranty should transfer? I could probably get $100-150 for my trans core, so if i installed this it might cost me $650. How hard is a tranny install? never done one.
