Default 7/9/09 UPDATE: Transmission help....please!!

Ok here's the problem. Bought a 2000 Dodge 1500 4WD. It must have been ditched. The transfer case was hanging in two pieces, the front drives shaft was bent, and the front diff was hosed. My main problem was the transmission, the bell housing cracked at the starter. So I got a 46RE case and had the internals changed over out of my transmission and also installed a Sonnax Sure Cure

I finally got it running, added 6 intial quarts of ATF+4 and cycled through the gears, added 2 more quarts and drove down the road. PROBLEM!! The transmission will not shift! Has reverse and only first gear. I checked all electrical connections and I know it still needs about 1 to 1 1/2 quarts of fluid. The check engine light is on, but I have the O-2 senors unplugged since the exhaust is not bolted in. But could it still be throwing another code? I am at a loss and do not know where to go from here. The case I used was not out of a 2000 Dodge 1500, but it was a 46RE case. Could that be a factor? Would the computer need flashed?

The case is not the problem. But I would first make sure the fluid is to the correct level first. Then I'd check the codes.

Per the 46RE manual, if you have FIRST/REVERSE ONLY (NO 1-2 OR 2-3 UPSHIFT)

POSSIBLE CAUSES CORRECTION
1. Governor Circuit Electrical Fault. 1. Test using DRBT scan tool and repair as
required.

2. Valve Body Malfunction. 2. Repair stuck 1-2 shift valve or governor
plug.
3. Front Servo/Kickdown Band
Damaged/Burned. 3. Repair/replace.

Wow, so if it's not electrical, the trans has to come back out? I guess first I am going to replace the transmission speed sensor. I had a 1998 Durango that the speed sensor malfunctioned and would not shift until 3500-4000 rpms. So I may try that first.

So an update for ya. I haven't put the truck on a scanner yet, but I drove it again tonite and notcied the the speedo does not even register. So 100% the transmission speed sensor is bad. I had the same problem on my Durango. Come to find out AutoZone carries the transmission speed sensor and the rear ABS sensor. They are Duralast brand. Are these the same or comparable to OEM Dodge sensors? ABS part # SU3356 and speed sensor part# SU1034. I am going to pick up a speed sensor tommorow and see what happens and go from there.

Default Update on shifting issue....

So I got a new output speed sensor and the rear abs sensor. ABS and Brake lights out - problem fixed. Installed speed sensor and speedo works fine. Although the trans is still lnot shifting right. I got the fluid to the max line on the stick, got a total of 9 3/4 quarts in the trans. The motor tachs up to 3,000 and it won't shift out of first, but if you left of the gas and blip the throttle it will shift. I had to do this for every gear to get the trans to shift, but it shifts. When it was in overdrive, I switched th O/D off and it down shifted, but when O/D was turned back on, the throttle had to be blipped again to shift. What could be causing this? Seems like a pressure issue, but I haven't had a chance to get the trans scanned. Could the throttle vale be out of adjustment? I guess I'm glad the trans at least will shift to an exent. Any pointers are greatly appreciated.

Ok another update. Drove the truck about 50 miles. The transmission still has problems. It still shifts out of first at about 30-35 mph @ 3000 rpms. Once out of first it is like a game trying to get the 2-3 upshift. OD is the same way. But once it shifts into OD, almost instantly it goes into lock up and bogs down the motor. The trans downshifts fine, the shifts (up and down) are smooth and does not jerk. Oddly when I left the place I drove to, I was going about 10 mph and the trans shifted fine into 2nd, but that was the only time I had the pleasure of an accurate shift. LOL! Can the tranmission still throw codes and the CEL not be illuminated? I am still at a lost, but at least the transmission did shift.

-Should I try the TV cable? It seems adjusted according to the manual, but could still be a potential problem?

-Would it be worth going ahead and dropping the pan to change the two problematic solenoids?
