since the cps looked bad and you replaced it you may have gotten a bad one. i know advance has a tester for them (just found that out recently), so it would be worth taking it back out to get it tested. i'm not sure if the tester would work for a 96 jeep though, the one i got tested was on an early 90s blazer. it might be best to call the parts store first and see if they can test it.

Finally got this thing troubleshot and it turned out to be the crankshaft position sensor. The trouble code does not tell you specifically what is wrong, only that either the CKS or CPS is not sending a proper signal. Getting to the CKS on this Jeep is a real pain. It's on the bellhousing behind the engine and the shift linkage is in the way. Took some time and finesse by my brother to get it out and the new one in. Once replaced, it started right up. On my RAM V10 the CKS is on the right side of the block and is easy to get to. At least I don't have to listen to my brother bitching anymore. I sold him the Jeep after I bought my RAM.
