Default Underhood insulation

Is there any harm in removing the foam insulation that is attatched to the hood's underside? Mine is quite worn and I've heard that they can become wet and sag onto the exhaust manifold so I would like to get rid of it if there are no ill effects like paint damage or whatever.

Well, when mine started sagging I started reading about it. I could never get an answer exactly. Some say their paint started peeling after removing them but they weren't positive it was from that. Others said theirs still seemed fine. My buddy who used to work at the dealer told me it would make the paint peal.

I ended up not wanting to take any chances so I just bought a new one from the dealer for $100 and some $'s and replaced it.

i'd like to see some answers on this one too. mine detatched from the front of the hood and i don't want to cook the paint off, thats why its still there. i know lastrights doesn't have one and his still looks good but i'd like to know the long-term effects of not having one.

I was in the same situation as hometheaterman. You won't get a straight answer on this. Some will say that it is needed to protect the hood paint, others will say it is worthless. The question you have to answer is whether it is worth $100 to help protect the paint on your hood.

We own two old pontiacs. 69 tempest- fully restored and a 77 CanAm and neither of the cars have any insulation under the hood at all. So i dont see a really big need for it. The tempest runs super hot. 13.1 compression motor and we have a hard time keeping her cool with electric fans, and the paint is fine on the hood of that car.

Mine has been gone for almost 5 years now, with 2 of those years having over heating issues in the summer. The paint on mine looks fine.

Same here. Got the truck under 40k on it. never had it on. Its used more in the winter in cold climates to keep the motor warm.
