Default Hopping in 4wd

Hi all, my truck is a '99 4x4 QC with the 5.9
Long story short I got called at 1am this morning to help pull a friend out of a mud hole. The (woman) driver found that Ford Explorers don't like sucking water into the intake...Anyway I had to pull the SUV out of the mud pit and up a very sandy hill. I had it in 4hi and when I gave it gas to start up the hill my whole truck started hopping violently. I've never experienced anything like this before and I was just wondering if it's normal. I can't imagine it's very good for the drivetrain or suspension. Is there anything I can do to stop it? Any input is appreciated, thanks.

thats just phisycs, not a problem with your truck. When that happens, stop immediately, you can do serious damage to the front CV joints and driveshaft.
