Damn it, man! This is the exact type of job that a father should be bonding with his son over a beer with. Maybe just one beer at the end of it.

Good point AIM, I'm in NH and my Father still lives on L.I. Too many years have gone by and too many missed opportunities for spending time with him.

OK, Aims, let's not encourage any illegal activities. How about a Samuel Addams, tastes the same with no alcohol and grants you the same bonding effect.

Make sure you have your Haynes manual handy. There is a specific pattern for the intake bolts.

speaking of JD diesels, we just had to take in a 4 cyl. power unit (irrigation motor) it had a bent pushrod and a broken pushrod, it got a top end overhaul (new sleeves, pistons, rings, injectors) also got new bearings, and they replaced the head (the valves were shot, and it would have costed 1000 for machining, a new head was 1600, and we get the motor this week, compared to next, if we had the old machined...and we NEED this motor back, this irrigation needs to go around, due to a lack of rain here)

thats, machining, all new valves, and i cant remember what else, these JD parts are not cheap to work on at all, but we got a new head for 1600, so the motor is basically new (we're expecting to get 10,000 hrs out of it)
we also deleted the ghetto priming system for the irrigation pump, (it used the exhaust system, and we're thinking thats why the motor started having problems, part of the exhaust is open, and moisture can accumulate on the exhaust vavles, along with a mouse nest that hammered the No. 1 piston, and messed up the exhaust valve)

we only have one other irrigation system with that priming system, and guess what, it's in need of an OH, those two are the only ones with problems, i think dad and I are going to do that one ourselves if it makes the rest of the season (mucho cheaper)
