Default 46rh in a truck that came with 46rh

This is a question to the tranny experts on the forum. Has anyone put a 46rh in a truck that came with the re? Is the only difference the valve body and some electrical connections. Thoughts? Bro is going to buy a 2001 off road and wants to use the older tranny tho.

We have a tranny expert, Monte C, here that can best answer your question. I'd wait for him to jump in before doing anything.

The electrical connections are not just "some electrical connections", they are 100% necessary for the transmission to shift properly since O/D is controlled by the PCM.

From most questions posted about this topic they usually recommend swapping the computer too. I am pretty sure that you will run into tons of problems using a computer programmed for a 46RE and a 46RH trans.

Too much work for essentially the same transmission. If you maintain the RE properly (clean the gov. solenoids on every fluid change), it will last just as long as the RH unit. The only thing comparable with the two units are the gear sets.

The 46RH is slightly longer than the 46RE meaning you would need to modify you drive shafts aswell.

OK, smarty, What's involved? Do you need to drop the valve body?
