Default P0441 code and truck dying!!

Check engine light turned on so I had my codes ran, and it said it was P0441 which is evap purge fault. When the truck has a cold start, it runs fine but once you start driving, it dies out at stops. I pulled two hoses off of the canister, and one was pouring out small peices of charcol and you could tell the canister was filled with loose charcol. Would this mean I have to replace the canister? And if so what else should I do?

Thanks

Charcoal in the hose = not a good sign. I would replace it and the solenoid and blow the hoses out before re installing them.

Yes, and since you have a 97 , the solenoid is either mounted on the back of the drivers valve cover , or on the passenger side inner fender well, if you have not figured that out already.
