Default Which year should I buy?

I'm considering getting a '99 Ram 1500 ST 5.2 V8 4x4 quad cab with 5 speed manual. Is there anything I should be on the lookout for? Were there any significant changes over the '98 model? How many years has this motor and tranny been used by Dodge?

I'm trying to avoid geting a truck that has significant changes from the previous year model (so that Dodge has had a chance to work out the kinks). Which years were big changes made?

I'm looking for a rig to pull my 3000lb boat, and for hunting. I don't want anything too fancy, and it won't be driven a whole lot. Any input would be much appreciated.

Quoted from LMC:
"Ram Sport models were redesigned to feature a body color front bumper and grille, quad headlights, clear driving/fog lights, and graphics. Steering mounted radio controls were available.Overhead consoles were redesigned. Vacuum fluorescent odometer display debuted."

Other than that, the headlight switch is different, and there were a few more fancier options available.

The only very "noticeable" changes are that in '98 the interior was redesigned, so it looks different inside in a '98 verses '94-'97.....

The "dead spot" in the steering was fixed in '98 too. Other than that I dont think much changed.

And as far as the 5.2 318 engine, it has been used since the '80's and its a damn good engine.

Your gonna have a lot of the same problems no matter what 2nd gen year truck you buy. Like another person said up top, the only major change was the transition from 1997- 1998 all that was done was an interior upgrade. (Oh, and the mirrors went to black plastic instead of plastic with chrome foil over them.)

Depending on the mileage, and condidition, you might have your self a good buy.

Oh, who ever said that the magnums have been used since the 80's needs to read history a little more. The Magnum motors have been around since the late 60's. Just FYI.

Make that 1967. The 318 debuted in 1967. The Magnum 318 debuted in 1992.
Buy it. It has the 5-Speed, which is a BIG plus. DOnt worry about pulling your boat. It will do it. I tow a 7,000 lb camper without any problems.

If it has low miles and is a quad cab (not an extended cab), i'd jump all over that. Great motor/trans combo.
