Does anybody know where the thermostat is on a 98 1500 5.2 4x2 and how hard it is to change it?

Just follow the top radiator hose from the radiator. It's at the end of the hose under the little housing. Just 2 bolts to remove.

under the upper radiator hose on intake manifold. 2 bolts 1gal coolant..195deg t'stat and Gskt....

WHY?

I do beleive its on the top of the engine in front of the intake. You will see the upper rad hose going to it..

Ive heard its an agravating job..

Somone else will chime in tho. Somone who has acually replaced one in there truck.

Say...are you the same person that had the overheated battery cable a while back? If so what was the issue?

Anyway..as far as the T-stat goes, I would disconnect the battery, remove the fan belt and then the alternator(two bolts) and that little bracket that goes between the alternator mount and the intake manifold which has the air cleaner bushing on it. That access will, with an extension, maybe a wobble joint and a few choice words, get to the stat housing bolts so you can remove it.

its really not that difficult of a job, just a PITA. just make sure you have something to catch all your fluid in (unless you live out in the country lol). i'm assuming you live in texas, so if you replace it, i might suggest getting a 180* thermostat in place of the 195* one. if you get a haynes manual or chiltons manual, i'm sure its in there as well.

Don't let the others fool you. You DO NOT have to remove the alternator to get to the stat. It might be a little cramped, but not hard.

True, but it takes a lot more fishing around in there to get things lined up.

See, I don't understand why people have a hard time with this. I don't know if it's the fact that I've done so many of these, or if I'm just too lazy to jack with removing the Alternator, and belt. I Don't get it. I even have fairly large hands, and that doesn't hold me back.
Read my write up on it. I guess it may be the fact that I get in on top of the motor and am working directly below me, while others stay on the ground and try to blindly do the work.

In short, I just don't understand why people want to mess with removing the alternator, when they can stand on the front bumper and do the work in half the time. Not to mention, the more things you unhook, the higher the possibility is of you breaking something on an old truck.
