Why do car manufacturers all use 195*ish t-stats if 160 is so much better?
Call it a personal decision all you want but don't call facts BS.
Hell take your t-stat completely out, what were car company's thinking? You don't need that junk
Think about it this way, you go to start your truck and it's -10 outside. If cold really causes wear and tear, then living in an cold environment is just as bad. Even though when you start it up, the motor is going to generate heat fairly quickly, the internals are at -10. If what you say is true, then people that live in cold conditions, don't get near the mileage that people that live in warmer conditions do. It's the same argument as how hot or cold a stat is.

Like I said in my previous post (listen, you might not have seen it through your anger): EITHER THEORY BEARS LITTLE TO NO SIGNIFICANCE! It could be bad, or it can be good. Either way, it's a mute point.

Do whichever you wish, 180 should not hurt you down there. Just don't move north.

One of the reasons they keep it at 195 is because in the upper regions of our nation, and in Canada, it helps you get heat faster during the winter. So cold weather does have something to do with it, although I am unsure about the wear and tear aspect.
Yes it does! That's why it stay closed untill it reaches that temp! Otherwise without it wouldn't reach operating temp!

Cold weather has nothing to do with it, it only effects how long it takes to warm up, not the minimun operating temp! Unless it's super cold and never reaches operating temp, and if it doesn't you should take steps to cerrect this by blocking off the radiator.

All I know is my truck runs much better, has more power and better mileage with the 180 stat. Besides, my mechanic recommended it over the 195. Yes, I block off the grille in the winter but I like it cold so it doesn't bother me one bit.

If I remember correctly the main reason the manufacturers went to higher temperature thermostats was to meet emission requirements.
