Default Heads

Once again searched but did not find what I needed. Talked to the parts guy at the dealership to get some info about cylinder heads. Found that the cylinder head part number for the 5.2, 5.9 AND the R/T are all the same. I was under the impression that the R/T had a better set of heads(bigger valves, etc., etc.). So we began to dig further and found that all three applications differ due to changes to the crank and the cam. Can anyone confirm or debunk this? Why would the part number be the same for all the heads if in fact they are not alike? Is it possible to have the larger valves put in a stock set of heads?

It's possible that the castings are the same, but milled differently for larger valves on the R/T. Or not.

if the part was different in any way the part# would be different. so if the castings were the same except the R/Ts were fitted with bigger valves than they would be a different PN.

Its totally possible to put bigger valves in heads.... it is quite common.

As far as putting larger valves in, you only limit is the casting of the valve pocket. Just be sure you have the available material to mill out for the size you want.

There is an R/T head that did not come on any Ram but did come on the R/T daks IIRC. Those are performance heads by Ma Mopar.

R/T Dakotas and Durangos never came with a special R/T head. They just came with the 5.9. There is a special casting by Mopar Performance called the R/T. These are the ones that you are talking about.

Greenmachine, are you still running boost? If so, you really ought to give the aluminum Eddy's some serious consideration. Aluminum will shed the heat much better for you, and those Eddy's can be ported for some monster flow.

The only difference between a stock 5.9 and a dakota 5.9 r/t is a stainless steel exhaust and an r/t pcm.

Aim I am still running boost!!!LOve It.

Talked to the head mechanic today and found that the heads are all the same. It all has to do with money and working heads costs a ton (we know that). Chrysler throws the same head on everything V8 to include R/T Daks. He did say the heads can handle a valve change but I am better off getting the Edelbrock aluminums(;0 Aim).

Trey-- the only thing about the link that I found wrong is that they said the cam is the same as an SLT in the R/T Dak. After looking for differences the cam and crank are not identical in the 5.9, 5.2 or the R/T's. That is where they made the horsepower.
