Default 1998 Dodge Ram 4x4 318 HELP ME

My buddy pickied up this truck a few days ago. Its having some problems. The parkin break light and abs light are on and speedo and odometer. I read this is the speed sensor... Is it the sensor on the tranny, and where abouts is this one located, or is this the sensor on the rear diff??It wont shift outta first gear as well, but I think that is just because there is no speedometer. And if feels like the tranny is slipping as well. I topped up the fluids in the tranny. It was checked with the truck hot idling in neutral correct? It still slips the fluid looks like a brownish colour.

One more question I got a 5.9 2wd and I got a spare tranny... Can i use that transmission on my friends truck just remove the tail section and put his transfer case on?

Change the fluid use ATF+4 , and adjust or have someone adjust the bands properly. May get some more time out of it. IIRC it's not as easy as removing the tail, I could be wrong though, I'm sure someone else that knows more will chime in. As far as the speed sensor goes, replace the one on top of the diff.

when the one on top of the diff goes out, all it does is turn on the brake and abs lights and the speedo won't work until you hit 20 or 30mph. that sensor doesn't have any effect on drivability.

hmm well this thing isnt shifting and theres no speedo at all... i thought that hese are electronic tranny's and the PCM must know what speed its going to shift... the speedo doesnt come on at 20 or 30 MPH either... Anyways i was reading to convert a 46re 2wd trannny to 4x4 all you need is to swap over your tailshaft... Anyone confirm this for me??

Supposedly the sensor on the transmission on 98 and later models does nothing, it's done through the one on the rear end. But neither one is all that expensive to replace. I guess if I had this problem I would try both, but only one at a time to see which one was the culprit, if it was/is even the problem to begin with.

I will also add, that no way would I be thinking about replacing the tranny yet, until all other options are exhausted. It could even be the governor pressure sensor switch/solenoid which is fairly easy to replace and the tranny doesn't have to come out to replace.

no. i think left side front, by linkage is neutral safety switch.
speed sensor is on the output shaft. so its on trans on 2wd and on t-case on 4wd. towards the rear on both. if you have to buy one its not expensive, about $15 at autozone.
