Default oil change lol

so i changed my oil for the first time today, im just a beginner with car maintinence, and if done some major projects before, but never changed my oil. at first i felt ok with the job i had done until i remembered that you have to fill the oil filter with oil and rub some on the rubber seal and hand tighten the oil filter. so basically im wondering what if anything will happen to my engine since i didnt fill the filter up with oil and tightened it snugly with a wrench (not hard enough to mash the gasket) and lastly what does the 5.2L engine hold, i just figured on 5 quarts, but i know some mopar engines are 6

Oil amount is 5 quarts. You don't have to fill the filter. It's so small that it's not that big of a deal.

First of all, you don't have to fill the filter with oil, I know I'll get crap over that here but it is absolutely not required and won't harm your motor in any way if you don't. However, you do want to clean both surfaces and put some oil on the rubber gasket and tighten the filter another 1/4 turn after hand tight.Other than that, you have nothing to worry about.

I take so long to type a couple of my DF brethren posted before I did. Bottom line is,you have nothing to worry about. Give the filter another 1/4 turn twist with the wrench anyway.

Just tighten it as much as you can by hand, and like everyone else said the filter doesnt need to be filled with oil.Oil changes are really easy on these trucks, my skyline on the other hand, i had to put a steel rod through the filter to get it off because theres no room at all.

Tightening by hand is ok for people like us maybe, that have arms of steel. LOL But I still say for security reasons, give it that extra 1/4 turn with the wrench.

Just make sure the gasket of the old filter is off of the mating surface before you put the new filter on.

Default a matter of choice, i choose bsts (better safe than sorry)

fwiw, you most definately do NOT hurt anything but putting oil in your filter. i didnt the very first time i changed the oil on my 78 lil red express, which was the first car of mine that i changed the oil on. some people think it starves your engine of oil on startup which is when most of the damage (wear) would happen on a daily driver. and i personally agree, i mean wth does it hurt? nothing thats what. but either way your good.

so far everytime ive changed my oil its been spot on 5 quarts to get to full, bare in mind though a few of us here run the equivalent of the ford FL-1A filter, its about 2x as large as the stock dodge filter with no problems fitting whatsoever.

Welcome to DF! lol jk

Good post. Yes, some people believe that we are making the motor scavenge for oil, but it's a mute point on the OEM style filters. There isn't one reason at all for people to have to run a larger filter in a 1500 magnum truck.

BTW, go make 6 more posts, and then get your butt over to the TOTM thread and vote. You can get the link out of my sig.
