Help getting timing chain cover off
We took the starter off and tried putting a screw driver in the fly wheel but to no avail. Is there another way to get the vibration dampener off to get the timing cover off so I can check the chain and see if I need to replace it?
Save yourself the time and hassle and get a good impact wrench and air compressor. It will come right off. You can try using bars/screwdrivers to hold it but you just are going to increase your chances of breaking something else.
impact wrench is the easiest.
but - someone on here took a flat bar piece of steel, and drilled a couple of holes that would line up with the holes in the front of the balancer. the flat bar was sort of long, so that it hit the frame or the ground to act as a brake. very clever.
edit - i think they had to notch the bar around the big bolt.

Breaker bar and socket and smack the bar with a heavy hammer will break it loose. If you don't have access to an impact gun and compressor. It may take a few sharp hits but it will work in a pinch.
Also, I would suggest just purchasing a new timing chain/gearset and install it if you are going to have it all apart already. What is it like $60? I just did mine, and it seemed pretty cheap if I remember correctly.

I plan to replace my timing chain in the near future as well. I considered the double roller timing set and even the 4 degree crank offset for better high-end or low-end torque. I have not researched at any timing chain threads to see if it's any better to do that or keep it simple and stay with stock. I imagine I will stay with stock.
Just curious, did removing the fan assembly give you any trouble?
