Default Off-Road and Sport spare tire

I have heard that the Sport model and Off-Road models with the 17" tires did not come with a 17" spare. If this is true, what size tire did they put on the spare to keep the overall tire diameter close to that of the 17"?

Thanks.

Funny, I just bought an 01 Sport a couple of months ago and the original window sticker was in the glove box. On the list of options it said 17" wheels, but my truck has 16" wheels and no spare. Maybe they just didn't put a spare on it at all. Anyway I got another 16" wheel off of ebay that matches mine for 15 bux but haven't got a tire yet. Hopefully it will fit under there ok.

I have offroad package and I have a spare under my truck. I don't know what size it is though I don't have stock wheels either so I don't know what size came on it but I'm thinking it said 16x8 on the door sticker. I have 16's now just wider and differnt backspacing.

So, are the stock 16" rims wider then Off-Road 17"?

I have an 01 off road w/ the 17" wheels and my spare is a 265/65/R16. The spare should be the same diamiter as the 17", just narrower.

Hey silver_dodge, I looked at your pics at cardomain and saw your intake. Did you custom make your heat shield? If so, what exactlly did you do? That looks pretty good!

Yes, I custom made it. The air intake is Airaid, and they don't come with a heat shield like the K&N FIPK's do. I noticed that my filter basically sits right above the exhaust , so I decided to make my own shield to keep that heat from rising up, heating the intake tube, and getting sucked into the filter.

If so, what exactlly did you do? That looks pretty good!
-First, I custom made the larger heat shield that sits under the filter. It is 409 stainless, and I covered the side that faces the engine with ThermoTec adhesive backed heat tape (blocks radiant heat up to 2000 degrees). It is bent so that it blocks out heat from the exaust manifold, and is bent again in the front bottom corner to allow air coming in the opening next to the front radiator support to scoop up to the filter.

-Second, I made a half pipe heat shield to direct heat around the intake tube (really can only see it in the last engine pic). It is also 409 stainless, and I again put thermo tec on the side facing the engine. This half pipe directs heat around the intake tube, instead of letting it radiate directly into the tube.

-Lastly, I wrapped the intake tube in ThermoTec adhesive back heat barrier (that's why the intake tube looks like it is wrapped in duck tape). So essentially, the tube is protected from heat twice (wrapped, and by the half-pipe). The tube never hardly even gets warm, even though it sits directly above the intake manifold.

Overall, I think it's a good setup. Total cost to me was about $35 (mostly for the ThermoTec, I had a sheet of 409 stainless laying around from some other project). The temp of the air right by the filter is significantly cooler then the air below the heat shield. I can take some temp readings if you like. I know it works too because when it is very cold, I get ice or snow that sits on the hood. After the engine has been running awhile, the ice and snow above the driver side exhaust manifold will start to melt because there is heat rising up to the hood. But, on the passenger side of the hood, above were the filter is, ice and snow does not melt, so I am definetly blocking the rising heat from the exhaust on that side.

I am still getting a K&N FIPK in the next few days (it is in the mail as we speak, I found a good deal on one). I am getting it to compare, because I have heard so many people say how much better it is.

What size tire are you running? A 265/65/16 is about 29.56" diameter. That's not even close to any stock tire diameter (which is more like 31-32" diameter). Was that a typo?

I am runing 275/70/R17. Those were on the truck when I bougt it a few months ago. As far as the spare I am for sure. I had a exgaust put on a couple weeks ago and was looking at it when it was up on the rack. Weird thing though, the spare is a full size wrangler GS-A 265/65/R16 like I said, but on the wheel there was a notice not to exceed 55mph. I wonder if the difference in diameter is what the notice is for. BTW the spare is just on a cheap(spare) steele wheel.

Stupid ?? where did you get the 409 stainless for your heat shield? Is it hard to work with/cut?

I got it from a scrap metal yard. I had two 24"x48" sheets. I don't think it is too difficult to cut overall, but it is difficult to cut clean and straight. I had to do lots of trimming. Wish I had a plasma cutter. It bends easily too.

I think Home Depot and/or Lowes sells sheets of steel too, but not sure what grade.
