well, i took it apart and took the cloth out and then i painted cleared and wetsanded followed by polish

 

Looks good! I didnt know dodge had a beige interior >.<

Painting speaker grilles looks like **** and is waaayyy ricer. But the other part looks great!

heres more pics


this is what i did to the drivers side a few months ago......the fabric that i put down is not staying and i never got around to doing the pass side, so i figured i would go the route that i did


heres what it looks like with the inserts out......notice the small holes around the perimeter


you can see here that the cloth and foam is stapled on the back and the whole piece has these platic things that fit thru the holes in the previous pic and were melted on the back, they reminded me of a kindof plastic rivet....to separate the insert from the panel, i took a soldering iron and poked it thru the middl of these, melting off the heads


here you can see where the staples started to come out the front, ill show later how i dealt with these


you can see that the foam was kinda glued on, once all was peeled off, i took my finger nails and scratched the leftovers off quite easy


now, for the staple holes.......at 1st i screwed up and thought that the paint might cover them, but after a few coats i realized not and let it dry, then sanded the paint down



i then got a thumb tack and pressed in the holes to make sure that they were opened up real good and got some spot putty and filled in the holes




and this is after sanding down.......for the sanding, i wetsanded with 400 b4 painting
you can see that there were some low spots that were filled in also



since this was intended to be covered in cloth, it is a little bit smaller than the recess in the door panel, so i masked off and painted the small indention around the edge so no brown would show thru

 

i used rustoleum paint and clear from autozone that is made for plastic and doesnt need primer, the only bad thing is that it is a regular nozzle and not a fan like krylon or duplicolor......after paint and clear, i wetsanded with 1000 to get rid of the orange peel, then meguiars swirlx polish......never use turtles polish, i started to and it was leaving scratches and swirls

 

Looks good, nice job you did there and interesting idea. Most of us paint the window/lock trim with body color and leave the area alone that you did.

Rustoleum, thats funny. Up here we have same paint only its called Tremclad. I used it to paint my dash trim ring, gauge bezel, all the vanes for the 4 heater/ac vents as well as the 2 brackets(from a 98) I modified for under my race buckets. Stuff stands up pretty good over time(cleared also). Did the seats back in 00 and they still look great. Not as good as the pieces I painted with the proper body coded paint but for the cost the Tremclad looks quite good.
Used plastic adhesion promoter then, thinned the Tremclad(metal paint) a bit and used my touch up gun cause I hated the spray bombs. I agree, the nozzles suck big time (even heating prior got the odd splatter).

Guys have painted their cars/trucks with Rustoleum/Tremclad using rollers. There is a 69 Charger up here in hemi orange that used a roller & Tremclad. Looks quite good surprising enough.
