p1740??
i know there are tons of threads on this but im a little lost. this is about the 3rd time this code has come up and ive been told it has no definition, or it has something to do with the tranny. from what ive gathered on other threads its a tranny problem. yay. im not all that familiar with the abbreviations though i saw a lot of TC TCC etc. what do they stand for and what should be the #1 - #2 things i should be looking for, or should be replacing first? my transmission works fine in 2WD, 4WD hi, and 4WD low, doesnt slip or grind at all, nothing at all out of the ordinary. im pressed for cash and just need to know what i should be looking for and the cheapest things to start with. thanks
Are you sure the code that came up was 1740 and not 0740. 0740 is torque converter malfunction. There is no 1740. It goes 1739 then jumps to 1741. I just got 0740 and haven't time to take it in. usually just means something going on with your covert clutch circuit. Before you go throwing money at it, find out whats wrong with it, THEN you can fix it. go get it diagnosed. should be around 100 bucks.
i'm throwing the exact same code i had to bring it in for a state inspection so i plugged my scanner in and i was throwin a code for an evap leak so i replaced my gas cap (easy fix right) than i started throwin this p1740 code but my tranny shifts fine i got all my gears and this things throwing me for a loop i gotta figure out what it is but i dont have much cash right now or time so im up the creek. if anyone has any clues as to what it could be if it could be from a short or something stupid plaease let me know.
Thanks,
Alex

Its caused by your tcc (it locks your torque converter) and overdrive solenoids. They are a single unit.
The code is caused when your truck picks up strange incoming to outgoing rpm in the transmission.
Your problem could be the solenoids, torque converter, your speen sensors, not enough fluid, or like in my case, (and I hope not) your transmission is not long for this world.

I'm gonna be honest thats not the news i was hoping to hear. is there any tell tail sign as to which problem it could be i really doubt the tranny is on its way out the previous owner had it rebuilt 30k ago. what'd you suggest? i'm thinking its time to change my atf anyway so change it clear the code go through a drive cycle and take it from there? trouble here is that my registration is up and i need to pass a state inspection to reregister and my truck is at my buddies house...

I would go ahead and change the fluid. Its about time to do so and the old fluid can tell you a lot about the condition of the transmission. If the fluid and pan magnet dont look extremely dirty, maybe you should adjust the bands. This could also cause the slight slippage that could cause the code. As far as pinpointing the exact problem. I can only confidently say that I ruled out my tcc with a snapon scan tool that can actively read the truck's systems while driving. The tcc should be off while accelerating and shifting and on while cruising.
A transmission as young as yours should have a lot of life left as long as it was never abused and was properly rebuilt. What killed my tranny is that the fluid had never been changed for 115,000 miles and then I didn't know better than to change it. That lossend up all the varnish and crud and fried my pump and/or torque converter.
