Default Shocks - Correct amount of travel...

What is a good amount of travel for front shocks on a 5"-6" lifted truck that isn't used for hard-core off-road use? I took this from RockRam2500's thread to start my own and not hijack his.
https://dodgeforum.com/forum/2nd-gen...y-request.html
If you look at the amount of travel the second shock has for compression in his first picture, it appears to have maybe 2" of travel before it is fully compressed. Is this typical, or is this too short a distance? I ask because I have about 1.5" of travel on my single set of front shocks, and it doesn't take much at all for them to compress fully and it can be felt very clearly when it does. It appears that the shocks have lots of travel for lengthening, but for compressing them, if I hit even a small bump, mine compress and hit with a harsh thump very easily... Any input will be appreciated.

Sounds to me like your shocks are to long. Using shocks as bump stops (or *****ing straps when too short) will greatly reduce there life, and result in poor ride quality.

I recommend you measure your shock mounts (when extended and compressed) and purchase a shock which is made to operate between those measurements. Thats how I ordered mine.

Thank you olyelr for responding. I thought that I was right about them being too long. Of course the 4wheel parts guys that sold them to me said they're what is called for on my truck with the lift it has. I'll measure as you suggested and go from there. I just happened to see the photos that were posted in the link I referenced and noticed that the shock length was strikingly similar to mine, and I wanted to be sure I was correct before I started shopping for my new Bilsteins. (They won't be coming from 4wheel parts, I can tell you that!)

I think Superlift has shock dimension charts.
