Default Leaking gas tank

The cap of the sending/pickup unit of my gas tank leaks. I notice it is more common when driving in hot weather for awhile. I used to have a CEL code that stated small leak in evap system or bad purge solenoid. The CEL went away when my battery completely drained a couple of weeks ago, but has not come back on. I recently replaced a cracked hose on my evap canister. However, I still strongly smell gas after driving a distance in hot weather and the cap of the gas tank is wet with some fuel draining down the side.
Is there something else wrong with my evap system? It doesn't seem to do this- or at least not as bad- when I leave the gas cap off.
