318 to 360 swap in my 96 1500
Hey guys im gonna order a remanufactured long block for my 1500 and was wondering what ill need to change to make it work. i briefly flipped through the forum in search of answers and found bits and peices, heres what im dealin with. i can get a 96 360 no prob, and the 96 360 pcm, but what about the wireing harness? will the original one from the 5.2 work? and will the intake from my 5.2 that i just modded fit the 5.9? im sure my headers will the heads are the same, right?
Intake, exhaust manifolds will bolt right on and all your sensors as well. Not sure of the flex plate or flywheel. You will need a 360 crank dampner for sure. Other than that I think everything else should work. One suggestion is to really check your heads for cracks. THE OEM ONES ARE JUNK. I just completed a rebuild and had to replace mine with a heavier casted core. I checked multiple junk yard heads and they all were cracked. I wish I would have upgraded to a performance based head or the RT ones for better flow and went with an RV towing cam profile. Let us know how it runs when you get it finished.
I am looking to do this too in fact. How much did you pay for your long block? The wiring harness from what others stated is the same but, you know, I would look into that one and check the schematic, trace it out or, ask someone who knows for sure if it's the same exact pinout. It may have the same connectors that will mate but, if the pinout is wrong, well...enough said.
All the parts from the 318 bolt right on- no issues with your intake. The only difference between the two motors is the displacement. The mounts are the same, headers and exhaust...yes- they will bolt right on.

i decided to hold off on the 360 just in case , i hate electrical work and dont want to deal with potential wiring harness problems or BS. i realize the 360 has alot more potential for horsepower but im not racing the thing its just a strong running engine that will burn off a set of 35's like f@ck all. once its all back together i got ideas of a pro street involving a 408 stroker.
thanks for the help
