best gearing for 1500

Default best gearing for 1500

well i was allways wondering what the best ring an pinon size would be the best for ram 1500 quad cab 5.2 318 2wd

Lift/no lift? what size tires? If it is stock, I would leave it stock.

its gonna get 4in front and 6in back drop then im gonna put some diff 16in rims with 270 65r tires so. i was just wondering if its a big deal to change like my mustang was and another question what kinda cams should i drop in there

but do u think it would work about the same as on a 2wd as i see u have a 4wd truck just wondering

Yes A 4.56 will throw you off the line. Really easy with A tire size so small.

Stock 3.55s are plently for those tires, 3.92 is the max I would go.

so i got 2 pepole saying 4.56
and 1 saying 3.92

any other opinons


and any thing on what kinda cams i should get rebuilding the whole thing as a project

The first question should be what type of driving do you plan on doing with it. If you plan on just drag racing with it the 4.56 gears would be great. If you plan on daily driving it then 3.92 is the absolute highest i would go. If you run low gears in a daily driver you will go nut with the drag you would feel when trying to drive at highway speeds.

Always forget you automatic guys have a deeper OD ratio. After punching in some numbers I think 4.10s would work well, puts you at 2200RPM at 70MPH. Same overall gearing I have with my 5 speed, 30x9.50s and 3.55s and I get great mileage cruising 70 at 2200RPMs.
