As the originator of this thread I can sucessfully say that a transmission for a 5.2 will work in a 5.9 truck. Both transmissions came out of a 98 ram 4X4. I did not remove the flex plate from the engine so can't say for sure if those interchange but the tranny with the touque converter do swap. The dealership told me that the final drive ratio may be different but I did not notice a change in the speedometer.

The converters will work but they have different stall speeds.

Just curious here, but I would assume the 360 has a lower stall converter since the torque comes in sooner on them???

BTW, the 5.9 Cummins is 359ci, any manual that says otherwise is wrong. Granted that is a trivial thing to have wrong...

My service manual does not mention different converters for 1994 A518s but it does say they should stall between 1900-2100 RPM. Are they actually different converters (same k factor i believe it is called) or do they just stall at different RPMs because of the greater torque of the 5.9L?

I highly doubt 30ft-lbs of torque would bother stall speed that much... I went from around 675ft-lbs to 903ft-lbs of torque at the rear wheels while running the same custom triple disc billet converter and it still flashes to 1300rpm off the line... What I was thinking is the 360 converter probably stalls lower to take advantage of the fatter torque curve. At least that`s how I would do it

The two converters are deminsionally the same, but are stalled differently. The stall speeds have nothing to do with how much power, but rather where the power is made. The torque curves are slightly different for the two motors, calling for different stall speeds.

will a 94 flexplate from a 5.2 ram 1500 truck 4x4 with od work on a 97 dodge 1500 ram 4x4 with the od ???????

No, the 94 flex plate has an asymmetrical bolt pattern so one of the bolts in the 97 converter will not line up.

Ok I could use a little help here, trying to do the overdrive swap on my 72 B300 Maxi and am picking up a 46rh later today for a steal but it's off a 95 318 (which I now thanks to this forum understand the motor was internally balanced and the torque converter is not weighted) and am hoping to hook it up to a 72 360 (externally balanced) These are before the flex plate balancing, would I be able to use it? Would the stall speed be a prob? Or the weight of a full frame one ton van?

So I need to know if the transmissions are not interchangeable with the engines (because of the weighted/non weighted TC) or the torque converters are not interchangeable within the transmissions themselves. Also yeah, TC's are expensive huh
