1740 code and 4wd issues
I have 2 issues I'm hoping to get some opinions on. So here's the long story. I bought my 2001 Ram Offroad Sport used with about 103,000 miles on it (120,000 now). One day I was pulling my boat out of the water up a steep/wet ramp and need the 4wd. I noticed that when 4wd was engaged it was making this clicking sound. I assumed that it was a U joint or something but figured I'd get to it later as it was summer and I didn't need the 4wd anytime soon. I later put on a 4" lift and am running 35's on the stock 17" rims and stock (I assume) gears. I meant to change the U joints and get the computer corrected for the larger tires then but got busy with work and never got around to it. I've since used it to pull my boat several times (pretty much always with OD turned off), haul several really full bed loads of rock/mulch for landscaping at my house. So now for the problems. Last winter I used the 4wd several times. When it was a heavy snow covering the road I had no issues with anything that I could tell. When there was barely any snow on the road I used the 4wd once and it started making the whining noise again and the front end kind of vibrated and it felt like it didn't want to go fast so I took it out of 4wd. The tires where new and the same size so I don't think it had anything to do with it binding. I don't see why the previous owner would have swapped in a different gear in one of the axles but I have no idea if they did or not. Sounds like some kind of binding though as I never had problems if I was in deep snow. I haven't driven it much lately but the 2nd issue is that I noticed lately is after it has been sitting for a while, when I start it up and put it in drive it takes a second before the truck wants to move. It never did that before and it does have enough trans fluid. Shortly after I started to notice this I got the 1740 code. Does this sound like a bad TC? It drives and shifts fine other than that. If it is warm or recently driven it goes right in gear and moves. If its sat overnight it takes a second to move. I'm finally gettng time to fix both these problems and I'm wondering where I should start at. I'd like to fix it myself but will take it to the shop if needed. Any comments would be greatly appreciated. Sorry for the long post but I wanted to be thorough. Thanks.
