Problem with the wheel Bearing
Hi everyone
I have a 2001 Dodge Ram 1500 truck.. and a month ago..we saw the front left
wheel real wabally and felt like the tire was going to fall off.. well the wheel
bearing was shot. So we replaced it..greased it well and thought job well
done. Well Today...same thing..but this time we heard a POP and now the
bearings inside are in pieces. What could be causing this..the Auto parts
say there is no warranty.. So we had to buy a new one at $120 again.
Has this happen to anyone else?
Thanks for your help.. .

I'm going to assume it's 2wd, since the 4wd bearing is non greaseable.
Sounds like either the bearings were not packed correctly, the races were not replaced also or the nut was not adjusted properly(which is what I think is the case). Even on a 4wd the torque of the nut is important. Get a Haynes manual.
And fill out your sig or profile with all the info about your truck! Some one really needs to make this required info during the registration process.

on the late models like the 01, i thought even the 2wd was non-greasable, thus the $110-120 price tag.
anyway, make sure its torqued right, whatever that is - either finger tight on tradition 2 piece bearings or super-duper tight on those that require it, incl 4wd. its not common for bearings to pop on either 2wd or 4wd unless its got huge tires sticking way out with improper backspacing. and even those usually last a year.
welcome to df. fill out your signature. i'll say it nicer that zman who's always grumpy in the morning.

I've seen and worked on 2000's and up with both types of bearing's(Dodge cheapness or whatever). Although I agree with DV about the price tag, the statement that the bearing was greased is throwing a wrench into the mix. And if it was, some thing is not right, and there is the problem.
And I'm only grumpy when I have to guess and there is *******ly no info about the truck. I normally don't post a reply when that condition is not met. Why waste time typing?

Thank you all for your post...I will put as much information as I can on the truck right after this post.
It's a 2wd and we figured out that it was the nut that was loose and
cause it to not hold the wheel bearing assembly into place. I drove around
all over to get one. As for whatever reason the auto parts do not carry
them and always have to special order it. and your right dhvaughan
this one is non-greasable.
I will drive it around for a week and check it again..to make sure this does
not happen again, I use the truck on the freeway and the last thing I need
to for my front tire to fall off going at 65mph.
Thank you all for you help..

that big nut might be a dealer only item. they usually have either a cotter pin or crush dimple to prevent them from backing off. i like the crush dimples better as it seems like i can never get the damn cotter slot to line up.
